Chima UbaniFriends and associates of Chima Ubani, late executive director of Civil Liberties Organization, CLO, have unveiled a line-up of events to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the mortal passage of the human rights activist.

Sylvester Odion Akhaine, chairman, Board of Trustees, Centre for Constitutionalism and Demilitarisation, announced this in a statement issued on Monday on behalf of comrades, friends and family of the late Ubani.

The programme would begin on Thursday September 17, with a rally from Lagos Travel Inn, Toyin, Ikeja to Lagos State Governor’s office and Lagos State House of Assembly. This would be followed by a panel discussion by Women Activists and Friends to celebrate the life and times of Ubani, in a gathering billed to hold at the Conference Hall of Lagos Travel Inn, Ikeja, Lagos.

The programme, which is being facilitated by Nma Odi, continues on Monday, September. 21, 2015 at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where the grand finale and majorly a symposium themed:  ‘A Life of Service and Struggle for a Better Nigeria: Remembering Comrade Chima Ubani’, will be held.

Also on September 21, 2015, at Bayero University Kano, BUK, there will be a Students’ Retreat being organised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, through its platform, the Centre for Popular Education, CEPED, in collaboration with the Abiodun Aremu-led Amilcar Cabral Ideological School, ACIS, for students’ union leaders and activists in tertiary institutions in the country.

Ubani died along with Tunji Oyeleru, deputy photo editor of the Vanguard newspaper on September 21, 2005, in a ghastly motor accident in Potiskum, Yobe state in the heat of the struggle against the removal of fuel subsidy by the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo, then president of the country.
