Early today, the youths flooded the streets of Abuja, Onitsha and Aba demanding for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, director, Radio Biafra, who is currently being held by the state security.
The protest came shortly after the Ohaneze Group, the highest socio-political organ of the Igbo people of the southeast called on the federal government to release the man.
Ohaneze said the anger of the youth was caused by years of injustice meted out to people of the area. That statement from Ohaneze must have shocked the government, because the group had earlier disassociated itself from the agitation for self-determination. However, the group has a responsibility to the welfare of all its children, even where such a one had committed an infraction.
Kanu is on trial for leading a movement for self-determination for his people, under the umbrella of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. He was expected to appear in court earlier Tuesday but was not taken to court because the court could not hold. Kanu comes into the decade long agitation started by Ralph Uwazuruike of Movement For The Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB is in the middle of a crisis of confidence. His MASSOB has split into two, with a faction led by him.
