Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, UN, has congratulated Muhammadu Buhari, President-elect of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on his victory in the 2015 presidential elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday night in New York, Ban said he had spoken to Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan on the outcome of the polls as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
He commended Jonathan for his leadership qualities all through the electoral process and his statesmanship in upholding the democratic process.
The UN Chief also applauded the nation’s electoral body for organising the elections in a professional and credible “manner under challenging circumstances.” While noting that the successful conduct of the polls was a testimony to the maturity of Nigeria’s democracy, the UN Secretary-General called on all Nigerians to accept the outcome of the elections and appealed to them to address any complaints they may have through existing legal and constitutional channels.
Ban expressed hope that the same democratic spirit displayed in the presidential election would prevail in the conduct of the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections on April 11.
Attahiru Jega, INEC chairman, announced Buhari the winner of the March 28 election after he polled 15,424,921votes to defeat Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who got 12,853,162 votes.
