Mercy John, a female Police Sergeant serving in the Lagos State Police Command has received recommendations from the duo of Suleiman Abba and Kayode Aderanti, Inspector General of Police, IGP and Lagos Commissioner of Police, respectively, for her act of gallantry against an armed gang.

John, attached to the Provost office, State headquarters, Ikeja, and her colleague were accosted by two armed robbers in the Egbeda/Shasha area of the state late Tuesday. They were ordered to lie down at gunpoint. But she refused to obey even though her colleague did out of fear, police statement said.

Instead, John outsmarted one of the armed men by grabbing his neck and hitting his head against a wall, the police said. In the process, she got hold of the firearm the hoodlum was holding while the criminals fled the scene.

Ken Nwosu, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, said the firearm has been deposited with the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS while investigation has been launched into the matter to apprehend the fleeing hoodlums.

As an act of encouragement for her boldness, the Police boss rewarded John with the double recommendation for her “heroic” adventure.

“The Commissioner of Police Lagos State Police Command, CP C.K Aderanti immediately approved that the NCO be given the Commissioner of Police Commendation for this act of gallantry. The Commissioner of Police also briefed the Inspector General of Police, IGP Suleiman Abba, who immediately approved that the NCO be equally given the Inspector General of Police Commendation,” Nwosu stated.

Nwosu says the recommendation is a certificate usually given to an officer who distinguished his or herself the way John did.

Although he says it doesn’t usually come with any financial reward, the recommendation could add up to determining the promotion of such an exceptional officer.

“The Commissioner of Police wishes to congratulate the NCO for this uncommon act of bravery and urges her to keep it up, while urging all personnel of the Command to emulate the bravery of John,” Nwosu said.
