The police in Rivers State have said that those who detonated a dynamite in Christian Universal Church in Port Harcourt, a church owned by the father of Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike were members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, who paraded three men suspected to have carried out the bombing, said the suspects had confessed their membership of the proscribed IPOB and to the fact that they were sent to bomb the church by someone the commissioner said he would not disclosed so as not to jeopardise investigation.
The affected church is located on Azikiwe Street, Diobu, Port Harcourt.
Mukan gave the names of the suspects as Progress Onwudinjo, 37 years from Etche LGA, Rivers State, Apuru Victor, 23 years from Ebonyi State and John Okorie, 38 years from Abia State.
“In their statements, they confessed to be members of the proscribed IPOB, admitted they acted on the directive of a certain benefactor whose name will not be made public for obvious reasons pending the outcome of the investigation. Investigation is still ongoing at the end of which they will be charged to court,” said a statement issued by the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni.
The statement said the Commissioner of Police warned miscreants in the state, especially those operating under the guise of IPOB to have a rethink or face the full weight of the law. He reassured the residents of the state that there was no cause for alarm as the command under his watch was more than ever prepared to deal with all criminal elements in the state.
He appealed to members of the public to always share credible and actionable information with the police.
