In a bold and transparent move, Labour Party’s presidential candidate and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has released official documents to clear the air surrounding his engagement with the late General Sani Abacha’s regime, specifically concerning his co-option into the Federal Ministry of Finance’s Task Force on Ports Decongestion in 1996.

The document, dated April 24, 1996, clearly confirms Obi’s inclusion among several respected stakeholders appointed to coordinate port activities under the Abacha-led administration — not as a political ally, but as a prominent businessman working to ease the suffering of importers and traders facing delays in cargo clearance.

In a statement released on his official X (Twitter) handle, Obi emphasized that the decision to meet with General Abacha was a collective, pragmatic step by business leaders to address the economic hardship caused by port congestion. “We approached him not as political actors, but as concerned citizens,” Obi clarified, “seeking solutions for the benefit of the Nigerian economy.”

The document from the Ministry of Finance, signed by then-Minister of State Alhaji Abu Gidado, listed Mr. Gregory Peter Obi alongside other port stakeholders, with clear designations for oversight of the Apapa Port operations — reaffirming Obi’s long-standing role as a business-oriented technocrat even before entering partisan politics.

“This is a matter of public transparency,” Obi stated. “I am releasing this evidence not because I believe mischief-makers will stop, but because the truth matters to history. I will always remain accountable for my actions.”

This latest revelation comes amidst growing scrutiny by online personalities, including controversial media figure Daddy Freeze, who has himself come under fire after resurfaced footage showed him fraternizing with convicted internet fraudster Hushpuppi in Dubai. Freeze, who once dined and recorded videos in Hushpuppi’s luxurious residence, was accused of mocking honest Nigerians while allegedly enjoying proceeds of fraud. Although there is no court evidence linking him directly to criminal activity, public opinion remains divided.

Nigerians online have been quick to draw comparisons between Freeze’s questionable associations and Obi’s verifiable service records. Many have slammed Freeze’s recent comments questioning Peter Obi’s integrity, with some calling it “hypocritical” and “morally misplaced.”

As the 2027 elections approach and political narratives heat up, Peter Obi’s release of these documents signals his continued commitment to transparency — and a direct challenge to those attempting to rewrite his legacy.
