In what has been described as one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent Nigerian history, over 200 people have been confirmed dead and more than 500 reported missing following catastrophic flooding in Mokwa, Niger State.

The floods, triggered by days of relentless rainfall, have left thousands displaced, entire communities submerged, and vital infrastructure such as homes and bridges destroyed.

According to the Niger State Commissioner, the sheer scale of destruction has overwhelmed local authorities, with rescue efforts now halted. Officials say the focus has shifted from active rescue to recovery operations and preventing the outbreak of waterborne diseases in affected areas.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has begun distributing emergency relief materials to flood victims. These include clean drinking water, sanitation supplies, and temporary shelter for displaced families. However, many survivors claim they have yet to receive any government assistance.

“The water took everything—my house, my farm, even my relatives. Now they say aid is coming, but we haven’t seen it,” one distraught resident told reporters.

Scenes from Mokwa are grim. Grieving families are retrieving the bodies of loved ones for burial. Makeshift camps have sprung up across higher ground, with overcrowded tents and limited resources further complicating relief efforts.

Public health officials warn of looming outbreaks of cholera and other diseases if immediate interventions are not ramped up.

The Nigerian government has been urged to treat the Mokwa disaster as a wake-up call and implement long-term measures to prepare for and mitigate the growing threat of flash floods, especially as climate change continues to intensify weather patterns.

This disaster has left an indelible mark on Niger State and Nigeria as a whole—one that calls for not just emergency relief but sustained national action.
