President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday, alleged that Henry Okah, jailed leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND was hired to assassinate him.
A South African court convicted Okah in 2013 for masterminding the October 1, 2010 bombing in Abuja during the celebration of the country’s independence.
“Okah was procured by some Nigerians to assassinate me,” Jonathan said, adding that “I was told that Okah in a South African prison is endorsing some people.”
Jonathan made the statement in Lagos on Thursday during the flag off of his re-election bid.
Addressing the crowd that thronged the campaign venue, the President said his generation has failed Nigerians. He said though his generation failed to take Nigeria to the Moon, “We believe that the younger generation will take the country to the Moon. That is why I said am addressing the younger generation here.”
Speaking at the event, Jonathan said his administration has been able to transform some sectors of the country, including agriculture, road, housing and infrastructure.
Jonathan apologised to some civil Servants across the country that did not get their salaries paid promptly in the past few months.
The presidential candidate claimed his administration has been able to reduce corruption in the distribution of fertilizer to farmers by introducing a system whereby farmers now get fertilizer alert on their mobile phones.
President Jonathan also took a swipe at Muhammadu Buhari, Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC challenging him to come out and tell Nigerians if he did as much as procure a riffle gun for the security forces while he was military head of state.
