North Korean Internet Down

A few days after President Barack Obama warned that the US would launch a “proportional response” to North Korea’s hack against Sony, Internet connectivity between North Korea and the rest of world suffered a major breakdown on Monday.

Reports say North Korea may have come under a massive cyber attack.

“I haven’t seen such a steady beat of routing instability and outages in KP before,” said Doug Madory, director of Internet analysis at the cybsecurity firm, Dyn Research.

Experts say that while it’s entirely possible that the outage may have been due to a routine maintenance or technical problem, it’s equally hard not to link it to the recent statement of Obama in which he promised that the US would respond appropriately to the recent hacking of Sony Corporation believed to have been carried out by the North Korean regime.

Monday’s outage also comes as China is investigating the accusations against North Korea over the Sony hack. North Korea’s internet access is wired through China.
