Bala Ngilari, governor of Adamawa State has urged the National Independent Electoral Commission, INEC,to postpone elections in the State till April, following attendant security threats in the Northeastern State.

He said this at a workshop on “Internally Displaced Persons and the 2015 General Election”, organised by INEC.

The governor said at least 7 LGAs are currently being occupied by the Boko Haram sect. “In Adamawa, I can truly tell you that at least 7 LGAs are under siege. The supposed peace we have is just the peace of the graveyard. To say that the security situation in these LGAs are sufficiently stabilized so that we can have these elections on February 14,2014,to my mind, is false.”

In response, Attahiru Jega, chairman,INEC,said he has no powers to grant the request ,and insisted that only security agencies could do that.

However, the governor maintained that the most critical time for the insurgents to inflict their harms might be during elections.
