In a move to forestall an impending FIFA ban on Nigerian football, Christopher Giwa, the factional leader of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, on Monday, relinquished his position as the president of the nation’s football governing body.
In an interview with the British Broadcasting Company, BBC, Musa Adamu, Secretary General of the NFF during Maigari’s tenure who returned to work at the federation’s office in Abuja on Monday, said attention should now shift towards moving Nigeria’s football forward.
“It has been a difficult time for our football but everything is over now. Our attention should shift towards moving our football forward because the country’s football has gone through a tough period. The next step is to have an extra-ordinary assembly that will set a date for elections for the new executive committee. It is important to emphasize that this will not happen beyond September 25, as directed by FIFA,” Adamu said.
It will be recalled that FIFA, which declared Giwa’s election on August 26 as null and void, had given Giwa a Monday, September 8 deadline to vacate the office.
The development means the NFF will now revert to the status quo before Giwa’s election ahead of the new election which should come up on or before Thursday, September 25, 2014.
