The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA has pleaded for the release of Okey Wali, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN who is the immediate past President of the association.
Wali, the 26th president of NBA, was said to have been abducted in Port Harcourt, Rivers State by unknown persons on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at around 9pm.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by Augustine Alegeh, present president of the association, NBA called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to be committed to its constitutional responsibility of protecting the lives of the citizens.
The statement described Wali as a man of peace who has contributed in great measure to the enthronement of the rule of law, protection of human rights, and the development of the country at large.
“It is, therefore, saddening that he should become a kidnap victim. This sad event is yet another reminder of the state of insecurity in which all Nigerians live.
“The NBA calls on the Federal Government to step up efforts to fulfill its primary constitutional role of providing for the welfare and security of all Nigerians. We passionately appeal to his abductors for his immediate and safe release to his family,” the NBA statement reads in part.
