Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has strongly refuted recent allegations by former Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose, who claimed that the Federal Government allegedly handed ₦50 billion to Makinde—a suggestion that the governor withheld the funds to advance a future presidential ambition.

In a detailed response, Makinde’s office clarified that no such disbursement occurred. “What exists on record is a request and a promise, not a release,” the statement emphasized, referencing the Federal Government’s partial support following the January 2024 Bodija explosion, which caused significant loss of life and property in the affected community.

Governor Makinde personally presented a comprehensive report of the tragedy to the Federal Government and formally requested assistance. While a ₦50 billion support package was promised, only ₦30 billion was released, with the remaining ₦20 billion withheld for reasons outside the state government’s control.

The governor’s office highlighted that the funds released were managed transparently and effectively: ₦4.5 billion (15%) was given directly to victims as immediate relief, while the remainder was allocated for rebuilding infrastructure, restoring homes, and upgrading security measures to prevent future disasters. A memorial is also planned at the explosion site to honor the lives lost.

Makinde’s team described Fayose’s narrative as “misleading and politically motivated,” pointing to the timing of the claim shortly after Makinde publicly stated he would not support President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election—a stance that reportedly triggered retaliatory political moves.

Despite the controversy, Governor Makinde reaffirmed his commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance, stressing that his mandate is built on performance and the trust of Oyo State residents, rather than political theatrics or manufactured narratives.

Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, concluded: “Truth does not need protection. It only needs to be told fully, clearly, and without fear.”

This clarification not only addresses the allegations but also underscores the challenges of governance and political rivalry in Nigeria, highlighting the importance of facts over rumor in the country’s democratic discourse.
