A Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Uchechukwu Sunday, has called on the Rivers State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against the state governor, Nyesom Wike, for gross misconduct.

Sunday accused the governor of spending taxpayers’ money on goodwill and donations without getting approval from the House of Assembly.

He said the governor’s philanthropic acts contravened the constitution, which provided that monies should not be withdrawn from the consolidated funds except approved by the House of Assembly.

“We are calling on the House of Assembly to investigate financial dealings of the Governor of Rivers State as it has to do with unsolicited donations in recent times; and on the strength of these unwarranted donations, commence impeachment proceedings against the governor for breaching certain sections of the constitution as amended,” he said.

Sunday said he was making the call as a citizen and taxpayer that was concerned about the accountability of the government to the people of the state.

He listed some of the “unsolicited donations” made by the governor to include N500 million donation to the Sokoto State Government in respect of a burnt market; N250 million donated to Benue State Government; hostel blocks worth N5 billion to the Nigerian Law School in Yenagoa. “Such amount ought to be provided and captured under our budget,” he said.
