Protesting lecturers and students of the Lagos State University, LASU, on January 28 stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly calling for the resignation of John Obafunwa, the University’s Vice Chancellor.

Ajibayo Adeyeye, leader of the House who came to address the aggrieved students and lecturers was snubbed and embarrassed.

The students said the House took quite a long time before coming to address them. Adekunle Idris, chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU-LASU, who spoke with news men, accused the VC of destroying the LASU system.

“Obafunwa does not understand the way a university is being run including the issue of appointment and promotion of lecturers. He has been doing irregular promotions. He also gives PhD without having one,” he said.

Idris explained that the union wants to encourage the State Government to do the needful and help LASU to redirect its gradual descent to crises.

He said the Union would be joining other civil society groups to stage a rally to further call the attention of the good people of Lagos State and Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola’s government to the brewing crisis at LASU.

“If the crisis is not arrested, we are certain the consequence would not be in the interest of the government. For the umpteenth time, we are asking that the Lagos State Governor and visitor to LASU, Babatunde Fashola, calls the LASU Vice Chancellor to order, whilst at the same time setting up visitation to LASU immediately,” Idris stressed.
