Lafarge Cement Combats Building Collapse

To demonstrate its commitment to value adding offerings and solutions, Lafarge Cement at its second national workshop series, contribute its quota towards reducing the menace of building collapse in Nigeria.

The workshop, which was held in partnership with the Standards Organization of Nigeria, SON, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, and the Nigeria Institute of Architects was themed, “Building Collapse: an assessment of building practices in Nigeria and the imperative for sustainable construction”.

Ade Ojolowo, manager, corporate communications, Lafarge Cement WAPCO, explained that the one-day national dialogue was designed to bring together policy makers, professionals and other key stakeholders in the construction industry to discuss the critical issues associated with building collapse and proffer lasting solutions in the overall interest of the entire nation.

Explaining the rationale for the initiative, he says; “non-adherence to the established Building Practices and Regulations in construction has been a source of concern to well- meaning Nigerians, particularly as it relates to the problem of building collapse. We ensure that the issues are thoroughly examined and fully understood, and appropriate prescriptions that will make building collapse a thing of the past in Nigeria are provided by the concerned stakeholders.”

Discussants at the workshop include Kunle Awobodu, president, Building Collapse Prevention Guild, Victor Oyenuga, past president, Nigeria Institute of Structural Engineers, Tunde Lasabi, president, Nigeria Institute of Builders, NIOB and Bukar Ibrahim, chairman, Senate Committee on Housing among others.
