The Labour Party has successfully rounded off its nationwide congresses, electing new executives across 35 states in an exercise the party describes as one of the most transparent internal processes in Nigeria’s political landscape.
In a statement issued on Saturday signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barr. Julius Abure, applauded members for demonstrating a strong commitment to internal democracy, noting that the series of congresses held from the ward to the state level were conducted without interference or manipulation.
Abure revealed that since the commencement of the ward congresses earlier in the week, the National Monitoring Team had not recorded any negative incident, a development he attributed to the party’s renewed adherence to due process and transparency. He added that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies were also on ground to monitor the exercise.
“We are happy that party leaders across the states complied with all laid-down rules, ensuring that only the genuine choices of party members emerged. This congress served as a test run for the reforms we introduced, and we are pleased that it delivered the desired results,” Abure said.
He reaffirmed the party’s position that no individual is above its constitution, stressing that every member must submit to the authority and collective will of the party’s structures.
Abure further disclosed that Abia State did not participate in the ongoing congresses after a faction allegedly linked to the state government secured a court injunction to halt the process. As a law-abiding party, he said the Labour Party complied with the order but has directed its legal team to seek its vacation so that congresses can be conducted in the state.
Speaking on the party’s broader outlook, the chairman declared that the Labour Party is now more united, repositioned, and fully prepared ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“With these congresses and new executives in place, we have put our challenges behind us. We call on all members nationwide to support the newly elected leaders to ensure we surpass our achievements in the last general election,” he added.
