Kebbi to Produce Oil

One major highlight of Governor Atiku Bagudu’s inauguration speech is the qualification of Kebbi State to be an oil-producing state soon. The governor told the state at his inauguration for second term that his administration was already in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC to realise this dream.

However, the product that will qualify Kebbi state for that noble league will not be crude oil. It is ethanol. He said, “we have started ethanol programme in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area and other local government areas will soon join”. The governor is also excited because that would enable him to do more for the state. He plans to improve on the feat already recorded in the areas of education, health, infrastructure, and agriculture.

His excitement should affect the people of the state because of the pass mark he has got for proper handling of the resources of the state. For this, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN, according to him, has ranked Kebbi fourth among states that have been transparent in the disclosure of how public funds were used in the past four years. He has also got thumbs up for great strides in development projects in areas of health and education from international organisations.

For instance, the governor said, “UNICEF, recently, reported that our immunisation coverage has improved from as low as 18 percent to well over 74 percent.”

It is expected that membership of oil-producing states and the production of a globally desired commodity will aid development and put the state on the chart among states that enjoy good governance.
