Chelsea icon John Terry has firmly denied reports linking him with the vacant managerial position at Championship side Oxford United, insisting he is fully committed to his role in the Blues’ academy and has no interest in pursuing a senior coaching job at this time.

In a video posted to social media on Friday, the 45-year-old former England captain addressed the speculation head-on: “I just want to talk about me being linked with the Oxford job. I’m not sure where these rumours come from – I’m certainly not on the lookout for a job. I’ve spoken about how much I love my role at Chelsea in the academy… Certainly not approached Oxford, I’ve not spoken to anybody at all. I wish Oxford and whoever goes in as manager all the very best, but it certainly won’t be me.”

The rumors, initially reported by The Sun and amplified across social media including by Chelsea news account @ChelsTransfer, suggested Terry was a “shock candidate” to replace Gary Rowett, who was sacked on December 23 after a poor run left Oxford hovering just above the Championship relegation zone.

Terry, hailed as “Captain, Leader, Legend” during his glittering playing career at Stamford Bridge – where he won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, and multiple domestic cups – has been building his coaching credentials since retiring in 2018. He served as assistant manager at Aston Villa and briefly at Leicester City under Dean Smith, before returning to Chelsea to work with the club’s youth setup.
Earlier reports claimed Oxford’s owners had kept Terry on their radar after he interviewed for the role in November 2023, prior to Des Buckingham’s appointment (who was later replaced by Rowett). Competition for the post was said to include experienced names like former Rangers boss Michael Beale.

However, Terry’s swift denial pours cold water on the speculation, ending what could have been his long-awaited breakthrough into first-team management. The Chelsea great has previously expressed frustration at being overlooked for roles due to lack of senior experience, but recently indicated contentment with mentoring the next generation of Blues talents.

Oxford, meanwhile, secured a vital 2-1 win over Southampton on Boxing Day under interim boss Craig Short, lifting them out of the bottom three. The search for a permanent manager continues ahead of their next fixture against Swansea.
Chelsea fans on X reacted with a mix of relief and disappointment, many praising Terry’s loyalty while others hoped for his eventual return to the dugout – perhaps one day at Stamford Bridge itself.
