Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, marking one of the biggest design changes in the company’s smartphone history.

The device was introduced at Apple’s September 9, 2026 product event and represents the company’s long-awaited entry into a foldable-phone market already dominated by rivals that have offered foldable devices for several years.

Apple says the iPhone Duo combines the familiar iPhone experience with a foldable design that opens into a much larger display.

When unfolded, the device has a 7.6-inch inner screen, while its outer display measures 5.4 inches when the phone is closed.

According to Apple, the two displays use the same aspect ratio so that content can scale proportionally between the closed and open states.

The company also describes the Duo as the thinnest iPhone ever when opened.

The inner display features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare, while the device uses a precision hinge intended to provide a smooth folding experience.

The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and uses a custom thermal-management system with a vapor chamber to help maintain performance.

Apple has also designed the phone around a dual-battery architecture, which the company says helps provide all-day battery life despite the challenges of fitting components into a foldable design.

The device starts at $1,999, putting it firmly in Apple’s premium smartphone category.

Pre-orders are scheduled to begin on October 16, with availability starting October 23.

The iPhone Duo also supports Apple Pencil, expanding the device’s potential beyond conventional smartphone use and giving users a larger canvas for viewing content, gaming and multitasking.

Apple has redesigned iOS to take advantage of the foldable form factor, allowing applications and content to adapt between the outer and larger inner displays.

The launch comes alongside Apple’s new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The two Pro models feature the A20 Pro chip, a redesigned 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, improved battery performance and a smaller Dynamic Island. Apple also introduced new Pro controls that allow users to manually adjust settings including aperture, shutter speed and white balance.

The iPhone 18 Pro models start at $1,199, while the Pro Max starts at $1,299.

Apple is also using the launch to push its artificial-intelligence strategy. The new iPhone 18 Pro models run iOS 27 and support a new version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence.

Siri AI is being introduced in beta with iOS 27 and is designed to use personal context and onscreen awareness to perform more useful tasks. Apple says the feature will initially roll out in supported languages and regions, with availability varying according to local requirements.

The iPhone Duo’s arrival is particularly significant because Apple is entering the foldable market much later than companies such as Samsung and other Android manufacturers.

Rather than simply producing a smaller folding phone, Apple is positioning the Duo as a device that can switch between a conventional smartphone experience and a larger-screen format for multitasking and media.

The launch also marks a major moment for Apple’s leadership.

John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook as Apple chief executive, made his public debut as CEO at the company’s September product showcase. The event therefore combined the introduction of a new iPhone design with the beginning of a new leadership era at Apple.

The high starting price is likely to make the iPhone Duo a premium product rather than a mass-market replacement for Apple’s conventional iPhones.

But Apple’s entry could still have a significant impact on the wider smartphone market.

For years, foldable phones have remained a relatively specialised category, with manufacturers competing over screen size, hinge durability, thickness and software designed for multiple display configurations.

Apple’s approach brings its large user ecosystem into that competition for the first time.

The central question now is whether Apple’s hardware and software integration can persuade consumers to pay nearly $2,000 for a foldable iPhone when conventional flagship smartphones remain considerably cheaper.

For Apple, however, the message from the launch is clear: the iPhone Duo is not just another annual upgrade. It is the company’s first major step into a new smartphone form factor.

The iPhone Duo is officially real, and Apple has put a $1,999 starting price on its first foldable iPhone.
