Illegal Demolition: Detained Benin Chief, Four Others Get Bail

After seven days in prison custody on the orders of Edo State High Court, Benin, secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, BTC, Frank Irabor, and four others, were on Thursday released on bail in the sum of ₦1,000,000 (One Million Naira) each with sureties in like sum. Irabor and six others were arraigned Thursday September 1, 2022, over alleged illegal demolition of over 60 houses in Ulegun village, in Ikpoba Okha local government area of the state.

Presiding Judge, Justice Mary Itsueli, said each of the sureties must be gainfully employed, a house owner, and must appear in court on every adjourned date. At the hearing on Thursday, the court, after listening to applications filed by Olayiwola Afolabi for Frank Irabor and others, granted bail to those charged with the offence namely Frank Irabor, Aghavbere Osawemwenguan, Abel Oko-Oboh, Ode Uloko and Oko-Oboh Ebosele. Two others, Tuesday Atagamene, and Okechukwu Okeke, however remained in custody.

When the accused persons were first arraigned, the case was adjourned to September 15 for further hearing. Justice Itsueli had ordered their remand in prison pending the advice by the Director of Public Prosecution. The magazine however gathered that pressures from very influential quarters on the state government, fast-tracked their release on bail.
