Health Benefits of Mangoes

Mangoes are not just called king of all fruits only because of their taste and flashy yellow colour but also for the number of benefits they render to the human body. Research has also shown that mango fruits protect people from breast, colon, leukemia and prostate cancers because of antioxidant substances like quercetin, isoquercitrin, fisetin, gallic acid, methylgallat as well as plenty enzymes it emits. It is also useful both internally and externally for the skin by clearing clogged pores and eliminating pimples.

Experts have discovered that mangoes help to normalise insulin levels in the blood especially when the leaves are boiled in water, soaked through the night and then the water consumed in the morning. This, it is said, can help people prevent diabetics. Scientists say one cup of sliced mangoes supply 25 percent of the needed daily value of vitamin A, which promotes good eyesight and prevents night blindness and dry eyes while the fiber found in mangoes help digestion.

Edralin Lucas, an associate professor in Nutritional Sciences in the College of Human Environmental Sciences at Oklahoma State University, discovered that mango in the diet could aid in reducing body fat and control blood sugar level. He said mango flesh is a promising alternative to lipid lowering drugs.

Mango was seen to affect several factors involved in fat metabolism as it reduces the circulating level of the hormone leptin. Leptin is produced by fat cells and its concentration in the blood is directly proportional to the body fat content. The high levels of fiber, pectin and vitamin C in mangoes also help lower serum cholesterol levels.
