As Edo Queens prepare to confront the Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in the last group match of the ongoing 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women Champions League in Casablanca, Morocco, Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo has applauded the team for their achievements so far and encouraged them to beat the South Africans to put them at the top of their Group B to see them into the semifinals.

Spurring the Edo Queens into greater action, Governor Okpebholo assured them of his continuous support as they represented the state and Nigeria in Morocco.

In a statement on Friday by his chief press secretary, Fred Itua, the governor said his new administration was in solidarity with the girls who would be representing the state and nation at the CAF Women Champions League in Morocco.

Motivating the girls, Senator Okpebholo urged them to go and win for him.

According to him, “I think the girls might be worried about the change of leadership in Edo State, but I want them to know that we are with them. I have been briefed, and I know our team is in Morocco doing well. So, we will not abandon them. We are aware of the exploits, and I urge them to continue to dominate.

“My message to Edo Queens is that they have nothing to worry about. We are solidly behind them. We want our girls to beat Sundown on Saturday and win for me.

“Go ahead to also win the cup and bring it to your fatherland. Sports will surely be given a top priority it deserves in my government”.

Edo Queens will be trading tackles Saturday November 16, with the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Girls in the last group game of the CAF Women Champions League. Kick-off time is 6 pm.

The Nigeria Women Premier League champions, Edo Queens, began with a 3-0 victory over Commercial Bank of Ethiopia with Emem Essien, Folashade Ijamilusi and Goodness Osigwe scoring for the Queens.

Edo Queens ended their second match in a goalless stalemate with Masar FC of Egypt on Wednesday to lead Group B. They need a draw to qualify for the semifinals.
