Nigeria’s former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mustafa Adebayo Balogun is dead. Balogun, who would have turned 75 on August 8, 2022, reportedly died around 8.30 Thursday night at the Reddington Hospital, Lekki, Lagos following a brief illness.

Close family sources attributed cause of death to complications from heart-related diseases.

Recall that the super cop, who was appointed IGP March 6, 2002, was on January 17, 2005, ignobly sent out of the Nigerian Police Force during the President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration for alleged corruption.

Balogun was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja presided over by Justice Binta Nyako on April 4, 2005, for stealing from the Police treasury, and laundering over $100 million (USD) in his three years as IGP.

The former number one police officer, who pleaded guilty to some of the 56 charges brought against him, was sentenced to six months in prison, and forfeited some properties to the federal government.

After his release from prison on February 9, 2006 after serving his jail term, partly at the National Hospital, Abuja, he went into seclusion.

Reacting to Balogun’s death, former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Parry Osayande, said “He was a brilliant officer”. Osayande, 85, prayed to God to “receive his soul amongst His Angels and give him merciful judgement.
