The leadership of the 17-member Edo State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution directing the security agencies to rid the Anthony Enahoro Legislative Complex of political thugs who have for several days running occupied the entire premises and converted it to a place of abode. The Victor-Edoror-led House with majority membership said it was sad that the hallowed chambers of the Edo State House of Assembly had been desecrated with hoodlums occupying the complex thereby making it unsafe for legislative business.

The directive to the security agencies was part of the resolutions passed by the House at its resumed sitting at an undisclosed location in Benin, the state capital. The law makers condemned a situation whereby the hoodlums had turned the Assembly into a den of Indian hemp smoking and defecation.

They lamented that “The state government, under the guise of renovation, has destroyed the roof of the building, making the place inhabitable to the extent that the hallowed chambers have been messed up and valuables carted away. We hereby ask the state government to desist from such act of vandalism of the building. The relevant security agencies, AIG, Zone 5, Commissioner of Police, DSS, are hereby mandated to evacuate the hoodlums before they turn the state and the Assembly premises into a lawless state”.

The lawmakers were also said to have received three petitions from the law firm of Ehiogie West-Idahosa Law Chamber, signed by Emos Osawaru over what he described as unlawful removal of the Chairmen of Etsako East, Orimiayu Momoh, Esan-West, Patrick Aguinede, and Etsako West, Yakubu Musa.

According to a member of the House, “The petition described the removal of the three elected council chairmen as an infringement of their fundamental human rights, abuse of office, and political victimisation on the part of Governor Godwin Obaseki. The Speaker, haven listened to the content of the letter, set up a five-man committee to investigate the matter and report back to the House within two weeks before adjourning to Tuesday, August 18, 2020”.

It was learnt that the member, representing Uhumwonde state Constituency, Washington Osifo, is to chair the Committee. Other members are Ebenezer Okaka, Owan East; Nosayaba Okunbor, Orhiomwon East; Dumez Ugiagbe; and Christopher Okaeben, Oredo East.
