Babatunde Raji Fashola, Lagos State governor, on Friday sworn-in four newly appointed state high court Judges.
The new Judges are: Iyabo Olamide Akinkugbe, Serifat Iyabode Sonaike, Abisoye Jubril Nashua and Abdulfattah Molawale Lawal.
Speaking at the ceremony on Friday at the Adeyemi Bero auditorium of the secretariat Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, Fashola said though the new Judges are humans, he urged them to be incorruptible and remain knowledgeable in discharging their duties.
But Fashola expressed his displeasure at the National Judicial Council, NJC which he said cut the list of seven persons sent to it for approval to only four.
The governor argued that since state governments are responsible for the payment of salaries and allowances of the Judges, the duty of appointing a state High court Judge should be left solely for the state to handle instead of undue interference from the national council.
Presenting the newly appointed Judges to the governor, Adeola Rahman Ipaye, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice said the appointment of new Judges became important because of the vacancies in the state judiciary due to retirement of older ones.
Congratulating the Judges, Oluwafunmilayo Olajumoke Atilade, Chief Judge of the state charged them to remain committed to their job. She also used the occasion to appeal for the appointment of more Judges in order to ensure quick and efficient dispensation of justice.
