Ekiti APC Rally: Amaechi, Oshiomhole, others stopped by Security Agents

Rotimi Amaechi, Rivers State governor was on Thursday prevented by security agents from entering Ekiti State where he had planned to attend a rally of the opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC.

A statement released by Ibim Semenitari, Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications on Thursday said Amaechi was stopped by soldiers in Odudu, OndoState on his way to attend the All Progressives Congress, APC political rally holding in Ekiti.

Semenitari said Amaechi was “ambushed” and refused entry into Ekiti by “military personnel on orders from above.”

The statement further said that the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF was already returning back to Akure where his chattered aircraft was parked but “was chased and rounded by armed soldiers and security personnel in Odudu, Ondo State.”

In a related development, Lai Mohammed, APC’s national publicity secretary said the helicopter billed to convey Adams Oshiomhole, Edo State governor to the rally was prevented from taking off in Benin, Edo State capital while the plane conveying Rabiu Kwankwanso, Kano State governor and Murtala Nyako, his Adamawa State counterpart to Ado-Ekiti, venue of the rally was refused landing permission at the Akure airport in Ondo State from where they were supposed to continue the journey to Ekiti by road.

There has been no official explanation from the security agencies for these developments which have been described by many observers as “disturbing” and”a flagrant abuse of the right of citizens to freedom of movement.”
