The joy of the employees of DHL Nigeria, a courier and logistics company, is immeasurable. They are excited over the UPstairs Scholarship Programme, a platform put in place by the company to provide financial support worth €2,000 per annum to their children and families who desire to switch to a higher calibre school or moving on to secondary school or university for three years. Randy Buday, country manager of the company, explained that other than the financial assistance, the programme also offers individual services to each child, such as mentoring by a company employee and offering an internship opportunity at a DHL branch.
The scholarship, which is an annual event, is open to all eligible children between the ages 12 and 21 years who have good grades in school. “They write a test, and the most successful are selected and interviewed. At least, one of the parents must be a full-time employee at DHL with at least two years of continuous service, at the time of application,” he explained. Buday added that initiative aims to foster equal access to education by addressing some of the social challenges faced in the world today as a result of lack of access to proper education.
The UPstairs Scholarship Programme is part of DHL’s core corporate responsibility programmes, under the motto: Living Responsibly.
