Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC has promised that women would be given better consideration in key areas of government if voted into power next week.
Buhari, who gave the assurance at a town hall meeting with Nigerian women professionals in Lagos, Thursday, March 19, 2015, mentioned the economy, health, security, good governance, power and agriculture as some of the areas his government would give priority attention to.
He said the APC government, under his leadership, is committed to “implementation of the 2005 National Gender Policy, which serves as a roadmap for the promotion of women’s empowerment and gender equality in Nigeria.
Government, he said, would through legislation ensure a woman’s right to own and inherit property on an equal basis with men, saying that “my administration will have zero tolerance for violence against women and girls.”
Women, he added, would be free from any form of discrimination. “It might be a long journey, but with your support and votes, we will be on the right path together. Nigerian women have been promised so much for so long. I stand before you now to make a solemn promise that I will not take you or your votes for granted,” he stressed.
While also admitting that it is not possible for him to clap with one hand, the APC presidential candidate promised to abide by the party’s manifesto.
