In a dramatic escalation of trade tensions, U.S. President Donald J. Trump has announced a 50% tariff on all Brazilian imports, starting August 1, 2025, citing Brazil’s treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro and alleged censorship of American social media platforms.

In a letter dated July 9, 2025, addressed to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President Trump described the trial of Bolsonaro as a “witch hunt” and an “international disgrace,” calling for its immediate end.

Trump, who previously praised Bolsonaro as a “highly respected leader,” accused Brazil of insidious attacks on free elections and free speech, referencing actions by the Brazilian Supreme Court.

“This trial should not be taking place. It is a Witch Hunt that should end IMMEDIATELY!” Trump wrote.

The former U.S. president also condemned Brazil’s regulatory actions against American tech firms, citing “millions of dollars in fines and eviction” threats directed at U.S. platforms operating in Brazil’s digital market. In retaliation, Trump declared that starting next month, the U.S. will impose a 50% tariff on all Brazilian goods, separate from existing sectoral tariffs. Goods rerouted through third countries to avoid the levy will also be taxed at the higher rate.

The letter further indicates that years of dialogue on trade relations have failed due to what Trump called “unreciprocated” and “unfair” tariffs and trade barriers imposed by Brazil. He emphasized the need for a “level playing field” and pledged that U.S.-based manufacturing by Brazilian firms would remain exempt from the new tariffs.

“There will be no Tariff if Brazil, or companies within your country, decide to build or manufacture product within the United States,” Trump assured.

This aggressive move threatens to significantly disrupt trade between two of the largest economies in the Western Hemisphere and has already sparked waves of concern among international trade observers and economic analysts. Critics warn of potential retaliatory tariffs from Brazil and damage to bilateral relations, while Trump supporters hail the move as a bold stand for free speech and fair trade.

The Brazilian government has yet to respond officially to the announcement.
