Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has reportedly agreed to contest the 2027 presidential election, according to a close political associate within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The revelation, confirmed by a senior PDP figure familiar with high-level consultations, suggests the former leader has formally accepted persistent calls from influential party stakeholders and respected national elders urging him to re-enter the political arena.
“The decision has been made. He’s accepted to run. He wants to offer leadership once again to address the poverty, insecurity, and economic hardship currently ravaging the country,” the source disclosed, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s President from 2010 to 2015, is reportedly committing to a single-term presidency if elected — a strategic move seen by political observers as a bargaining chip to win support from northern leaders. The arrangement, they say, would ensure a smoother transition for power to return to the North by 2031 without major opposition from the South.
If confirmed, Jonathan’s return to the race will mark one of the most significant political comebacks in Nigeria’s democratic history, setting the stage for a highly competitive and potentially polarizing 2027 general election.
