Babatunde Omidinna, the ace comedian whose stage name was Baba Suwe is dead. He died Monday afternoon after a brief illness. His demise was announced in an Instagram post by one of his children, Sola Omidina. The late Omidinna hailed from Igbogbo, in Ikorodu area of Lagos State. He was born on August 2, 1958. He attended Jamaitul Islamial Primary School in Lagos and Children Boarding School, Osogbo, after which he proceeded to Ifeoluwa Grammar School, also in Osogbo, Osun State, where he obtained West African School Certificate. He started his acting career in the year 1971 and became popular after he featured in a movie titled “Omolasan”, and later “Iru Esin”. The latter was produced by Olaiya Igwe in 1977. He had produced and acted in several Nigerian movies such as; Baba Jaiye jaiye. In 2011, Omidina was accused by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA of trafficking in hard drugs, but a Lagos High Court did not only free him, it awarded costs against the agency. However, the agency appealed the judgement, thus did not apologise to the actor as demanded by the court nor pay the judgement sum of N25 million. Omidina who later came down with diabetes lamented his ordeal, stating that the torture to which he was subjected by the operatives of NDLEA was responsible for his medical condition. Complaining about the cost of treatment and the refusal of the agency to compensate him according to the ruling of the court, he expressed sadness that the death of his lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, complicated his ordeal, because the lawyer would have fought further for him. He was married to Omoladun, who died in 2009. They had three children.
