No fewer than 11 students of the University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID have been confirmed dead, following an accident that occurred November 20. The students were on their way to Damaturu in Yobe State from Maiduguri as the strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU persists.

While expressing sadness over the deaths, Best Okereafor, National Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS in a condolence message on Friday, said: “NANS mourns the fallen Nigerian students and in same vain attribute the demise to the ongoing Academic Staff Unions of Universities strike. NANS believes that if the strike was not ongoing; the students would have been in school, studying.”

The students’ body called on the federal government to save their future and consider Nigerian students who are often told that they are the leaders of tomorrow, including the fallen ones.

NANS also called on the federal government to make students happy by meeting the demands of the striking ASUU and Colleges of Education lecturers without further delay.

The students also appealed to ASUU not to politicise the industrial action but consider the lives of Nigerian students by shifting grounds.
