Senator Gbenga Ashafa, a lawmaker representing Lagos East, on Wednesday said he would not be contesting for the governorship of the state. The senator said he plans to contest for a second term in the Senate come 2015.
Ashafa’s recent decision was contained in a statement released by his Head of Media, Constituency office, Babatunde Adegunju.
The statement read in part, “In a bid to give a clear direction on his political ambition which has been the subject of many debates bordering on the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in Lagos State, Senator Ashafa has declared his intention to run for a second term in the 2015 general elections”.
The statement said Senator Ashafa would be vying for a second term as Senator to represent Lagos East Senatorial District at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly in next year’s election. Quoting Ashafa, the statement said the senator reached the conclusion to return to the senate after series of consultations.
“After series of consultations with our political leaders, I have concluded that I will run for a second term in office as a Senator to represent the good people of Lagos East Senatorial District in the Senate come 2015,” Ashafa said.
The statement added that Ashafa had sponsored about 76 Constituency Projects in the district since his election into office in 2011.
