Nigerian activist and social commentator, VeryDarkMan, has sparked intense online reactions after criticizing Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, for hosting only the Igbo members of the victorious Super Falcons team.

In a viral video posted on social media, the outspoken critic described the Governor’s action as tribalistic, calling it an insult to the unity and collective effort of the national team.

“This is pure tribalism. The Super Falcons won as a team. Why honor just the Igbo players? That’s not how you celebrate national heroes,” VeryDarkMan stated in the video, which quickly gained traction on X (formerly Twitter).

The Super Falcons recently secured a remarkable victory at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), earning praise and monetary rewards from the Federal Government. But this latest development has cast a shadow over that success, with many Nigerians accusing Governor Uzodinma of using an ethnic lens to recognize what was clearly a national achievement.

Critics argue that such selective receptions undermine team unity and foster division, especially in a country as diverse as Nigeria. Supporters of the Governor, however, say he was merely appreciating athletes from his region.

Still, the overwhelming sentiment on social media leans toward national inclusivity, with many echoing VeryDarkMan’s call for equal recognition of all 24 team members who brought glory to Nigeria, regardless of their tribe or state of origin.

As the controversy unfolds, it serves as a reminder that national victories should be celebrated as one — without ethnic boundaries or political bias.
