Ahead of 2015 general elections, President Goodluck Jonathan said he would put national interest above personal ambition in his decision to re-contest next year’s presidential election.
He stated this in his Eid-El-kabir message to Muslim faithful. Jonathan said this as a response to his endorsement as the sole candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, by the national executive of the party and several other pressure organisations urging him to seek reelection in 2015.
Jonathan who had earlier said he is still consulting over the issue said, his decision to heed to the calls or otherwise will be based on national unity and public interest.
Reuben Abati, Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity while presenting the statement to reporters called on all politicians to learn to step above personal or sectional interest when seeking elective positions.
“I thank the many individuals, stakeholders, groups, associations, non-governmental organisations, unions and political leaders from across the country who have, in recognition and appreciation of our efforts and commitment to repositioning our dear nation for more rapid growth and development, urged me to seek a second term in office,” the statement read, adding that “In deciding on an appropriate response to such calls, I will place the greater interests of national harmony, cohesion, unity, security, political stability, progress, equity, justice and fairness above any personal ambition or sectional agenda.”
